Elmwood Board of Education Candidate Interviews
Three advanced history students at Elmwood High School have taken civic engagement and digital literacy to the next level by organizing a digital forum for local Board of Education candidates. The project was designed to help voters learn more about the individuals running for office.
Although the initiative was student-led, the students received guidance from the Elmwood Education Association (EEA) and their teacher, Mrs. Heidi Bench-Meyer, who helped develop potential interview questions. Mrs. Bench-Meyer then collaborated with the high school’s social media class, RNN, asking student Lizzy Patterson to edit the candidate interviews and upload them to the website.
The students—Keri Ervin, Gavin Minich, and Jakobi Turner—worked together to create an online interview space where each candidate could share their background, platform, experience, and educational priorities if elected.
The project will remain available online throughout the election season and may serve as a model for future student-led civic initiatives at Elmwood High School.
